Competition - 6th Jul 2009
2009-07-06 17:18:12
So, after a short and sweet, very sweet, race with everyone home by 17.00, this news section will now close until Wednesday morning.
The sky is closing in, the rain arriving.
As anyone who follows competitions knows, you only get a day off for sightseeing in the pouring rain.

Quiet for a bit while the pilots race the weather to be home from their tasks. Hot and beautiful here even with showers due later, which is a joy to our Finnish friends as Rayskala, where the Junior Worlds ended this weekend, had only 5degreesC this morning and some northerly areas, severe frost.

Today is also
Be Fair in the Air Day!
a great motto created accidentaally by the director in response to a few, shall we say, discourtesies reported such as dumping water on lower-flying gliders (probably unintentional but still wet...)
disrespect for the well/known priority rules in, and heading into or near, gaggles, which is also vital to flight safety.

The weather in brief (it takes a while to upload more maps to the site and most people are looking at a variety of constantly changing satellite pictures):
As described at briefing: Possibility of showers and storms in the W, S and high mountains but fewer than recently. The problem area is near the Czech/German border.
There is a significant linear weather system moving from East Germany towards Nitra (hence the rest day tomorrow, when the week's worst weather is likely). Not too much precipitation at Nitra. Occasional gusting wind around 17.00 Slight sidewinds for the landings much nothing much.

Hoping for a 1000 day before tomorrow's rest, the tasks set are as follows:
15m 333.5km
18m 348.3km
Open 372.4km
but they will be racing the weather as well as each other.
2009-07-06 11:17:47
Launching should start at 11.30 and the new tasks are 15m: AAT 204.8/472.7km 3hrs
18m 217.2/483km 3hrs
and Open, 227.1/519.5km also 3hrs.
2009-07-06 11:13:42
This decision was based on new reports that showers were coming faster than predicted from the west and jeopardising the chances of later-starting pilots of safely negotiating the more northerly turnpoints.
2009-07-06 11:11:20
Following a meeting with TMs on the grid, a decision has been made to use Task B for all classes, AAts over 3 hours.

Slip of the mouse! Some of these snippets have landed in the daily report too.

Racing task for all, today.
Tomorrow, Tuesday 7th July, a very necessary full rest day for pilots and staff after 8 action-packed flying days,
so there will be no reports tomorrow.

A big cheer, please, for Thomas Gostner and Stefano Ghiorzio, both of Italy.
Using all their skill and experience, these two great pilots hung in there,
and slowly but surely made it home. BRAVI! DAVERRO BRAVI!!

Good morning, Beautiful start to the day, pure blue with no clouds - a real novelty.
From my bedroom, I saw a man scything grass by hand, another strolling with his dog.
There should ne no precipitation in the mountains.
